Bradman Weerakoon, a senior civil servant and distinguished public administrator, has passed away. He was 95 years old at the time of his death and served as secretary to seven prime ministers.
He was the secretary to Sir John Kotelawala when he was prime minister and to S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike when he became prime minister. He was also the secretary to Wijayananda Dahanayake, who became prime minister after the assassination of Prime Minister Bandaranaike.
He served as the secretary to subsequent prime ministers Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Dudley Senanayake, R. Premadasa and Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Bradman Weerakoon had completed his primary education at Holy Cross College, Kalutara, and then his secondary education at St. Thomas’ College, Guruthalawa, before joining the University of Peradeniya.
He holds an honours degree in Economics and Sociology from the university and a Fulbright scholarship and a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Sociology from the University of Michigan, USA.
