Court orders referendum on Electricity Bill

The Supreme Court has declared certain clauses of the Electricity Amendment Bill to be unconstitutional, Deputy Speaker Rizvi Salli announced in Parliament today.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court has indicated that a special majority vote in Parliament is required to pass those clauses, and in addition, the approval of the people must be obtained through a referendum.

However, if the amendments proposed by the Supreme Court are included, the Bill will be passed by a simple majority vote, the Deputy Speaker further stated.
