Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara states that he does not know the basis on which former Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya was given the post of Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations.
He said that he does not remember Jayantha Jayasuriya being the Chief Justice when his government came to power, and therefore, Jayantha Jayasuriya must have retired when his government was formed.
However, the Justice Minister further stated that such appointments have been made by governments before.
However, he said that although he did not have a proper understanding of the basis on which the President made the appointment, the current government would not give anything as a bribe to any judge.
He further stated that he did not see anything wrong with an appointment made by the President, but that anyone could have a different opinion on the matter.
He made these comments during a program on Swarnavahini.
