Brigadier (Retd) Shammi Kumaratne, the main accused in the disappearance case of journalist Pradeep Eknaligoda, has been arrested and remanded.
The Victims and Witnesses Protection Authority has received a complaint that he threatened a key witness in the case, Suresh Kumar. Accordingly, following an investigation, Brigadier (Retd) Shammi Kumaratne has been arrested and produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court. He has been remanded until June 25.
A case regarding the disappearance of Pradeep Eknaligoda is being heard at the Colombo Three-Judge High Court. In that case, a witness named Suresh Kumar had stated that the testimony he had given was obtained under pressure and that it should be given again. The report states that this threat was made after that.
