Air India flight crashes with 242 passengers on board

A Boeing 787 Dreamliner belonging to Air India crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, with flames shooting up in the sky in video footage.

The London-bound plane crashed in the city’s Meghani area, sending a huge plume of black smoke into the air and prompting an immediate emergency response.

There were 242 people on board – 230 passengers, two pilots and ten crew members. The plane, which was headed to Heathrow Airport, was piloted by Captain Sumit Sabharwal. His first officer was Clive Kundar. It is reported that 53 British nationals were on board.
