A proposal to reduce the tariff paid by the board for electricity supplied to the national grid based on all renewable energy sources is set to be presented to the Cabinet, the Sunday Times reports.
If approved, the proposal will enable the Ceylon Electricity Board to significantly reduce the price paid for each unit of electricity generated under solar panels, small hydropower, wind, biomass and municipal solid waste contracts.
For the first time, a tariff has also been proposed for rooftop solar panels and photovoltaic systems with battery energy storage systems.
However, it is reported that payments related to previously signed contracts will continue at the same rates.
Solar panel owners who install rooftop solar panels that supply up to 500 kilowatts of electricity will receive Rs. 37 per unit, while solar panel owners who signed contracts on or after July 2024 (when the tariffs were last revised) will receive Rs. 27.06. The new proposal also states that the price of a unit for rooftop solar panels up to 20 kilowatts will drop to Rs. 19.61.
The price of a unit above 20 kilowatts and up to 100 kilowatts will drop to Rs. 17.46, while the price of a unit above 100 kilowatts and up to 500 kilowatts will drop to Rs. 15.49.
The price of a unit above 500 kilowatts and below 1 megawatt will drop to Rs. 15.07. Authorities also indicate that the price of a unit of 1 megawatt and above will drop to Rs. 14.46.
