The amount of waste collected in Kandy is reportedly increasing day by day as lakhs of devotees gather to display the Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa. Local government agencies are facing a serious problem in disposing of the increasing waste.
The streets in the city are littered with garbage, with polythene bags, plastic bottles and food wrappers strewn along the roads.
Visitors waiting in long queues said there are no proper places to dispose of their waste. Many people bring snacks, water bottles and other items to wait for a long time, but as the queues move, they leave their waste there.
Defecated polythene bags, urine bottles and the excrement bags are also scattered all over the streets, and residents also allege that defecation is taking place on side roads.
