Calypso Train Generates Record Revenue

The ‘Calypso’ train service with special outdoor viewing facilities between Nanu Oya and Demodara has generated a revenue of Rs. 720,000 on its first day of operation, Railways Additional General Manager (Operations) Vajira Polwattage says.

Although only 72 passengers had booked tickets on the opening day, the 172-seat train started its journey from Nanu Oya Railway Station to Demodara on the 8th, he says.

According to Vajira Polwattage, if all the seats had been booked, the revenue on that day would have been Rs. 153,000.

The Calypso train has been specially designed so that passengers travelling on it can enjoy the natural beauty of the route.

“The Calypso train will operate every Monday from Demodara to Nanu Oya and every Tuesday from Nanu Oya to Demodara. It will depart from Nanu Oya at 8.10 am. It is scheduled to arrive at Demodara railway station at 12.25 pm. The return journey will commence at 1.15 pm. It will reach Nanu Oya from Demodara at 5.35 pm. The ticket price per passenger for the Nanu Oya to Demodara journey is Rs. 10,000 and for the return journey from Demodara to Nanu Oya is Rs. 3,500,” he said.
