Here are the things that the Batalanda Commission can do

Advocate, Prathibha Mahanamahewa said that since the Batalanda Commission was appointed under the Commission of Inquiry Act No. 17 of 1948, such a commission has no power to revoke a person’s civil rights or civic rights.

He also said that only commissions appointed under the Special Presidential Commissions Special Act No. 7 of 1978 can revoke a person’s civil rights or civic rights.

He also said that it is possible to hold a vote in Parliament and deprive the relevant persons of their civil or civic rights based on the recommendations of the commissions appointed under the Special Presidential Commissions Special Provisions Act No. 7 of 1978.

However, Mahanamahewa stated that taking into account the recommendations of the Batalanda Commission of Inquiry, some positive changes or reforms can be made in the future regarding the right to life, freedom and fundamental rights of the people, and added that the Attorney General has the power to file criminal cases against the relevant individuals if there is sufficient evidence.
