“Although there is a serious discussion in society about women’s rights, the majority have not grasped the real root of the women’s issue. Everyone is touching the surface of the issue. She said this while attending the International Women’s Day celebration organized by the ”Women’s Movement for Freedom” at the Colombo New City Hall.
Expressing further comments, she said: ”We, as the Women’s Movement for Freedom, are fighting against the social system that oppresses women. That fight is political. Today, 120 million women around the world have complained about violence against women. 97% of women in the world are vulnerable. They are in a position where they can be abused at any moment.
This is why we say that women’s liberation can be achieved only through a change that turns the entire society upside down.
The Women’s Movement for Freedom who spoke there Nirosha Guruge, a member of the movement’s national committee and convener of the National Alliance of Microfinance Loan Victims, said:
“As a response to the oppression we are experiencing, women said that we should unite and change the government. Where was the country when they said that? 70% of the families in the country are facing a food crisis and have limited the number of meals they eat. 25% of the families in the country are begging from their neighbors to eat. They cannot afford the price of goods, the electricity and water bills are high, the youth have no jobs, the women asked for at least more allowance for working after sleeping. The women in the North asked for justice for the victims of oppression, for the return of the confiscated lands. Those are the aspirations of the people who voted for this government. But has any of that been fulfilled? Has the oppression been answered? No, those questions are recurring. ”
