Former Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera has expressed his views on the ongoing crisis of sales agents. He says that there is a court order regarding this issue, and that some parties, including the mainstream media, are hiding it and making false and misleading statements.
The former minister states on his social media account that the Petroleum Distributors Association had obtained orders from the Supreme Court in 2022 and the Court of Appeal in 2023, preventing the government from implementing the approved tariff formula of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.
He further states that the Supreme Court issued an order on August 30, 2024, overturning that decision, and that the order was received by the Ministry on Monday, September 2, 2024. Accordingly, the Secretary to the Ministry sought the Attorney General’s advice regarding the said order, and he further states that the necessary instructions to implement the order had not been received from the Attorney General’s Department when the change of government took place on September 21.
