Although the government has stated that 7456 people will be recruited for the public service this year, the Government Trade Union Alliance states that there are currently more than 50,000 vacancies in essential services in the public service.
Further explaining this to the media, the Secretary of the union, Ajith Thilakaratne, said that it has become difficult to maintain service activities in some institutions due to the non-filling of existing vacancies.
He says that 7000 vacancies have been identified in the public management service alone, 20000 vacancies in the teaching service and about 8000 vacancies in non-academic staff and school watchers. In addition, he points out that there are significant vacancies in the health service, railway service, postal service, and education service sectors.
He noted that it is essential to urgently recruit about 50,000 new recruits, even if surplus workers are assigned to places where there is a shortage of workers.
