Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe is the Sri Lankan of the Year.

LMD, a leading business magazine in the country, has named Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe as the ‘Sri Lankan of the Year’ for 2024.

LMD magazine says that the difficult task of reviving a severely depleted economy began under Dr. Weerasinghe’s leadership.

It also states that he was realistic about the challenges ahead and accepted that the crisis could not be resolved immediately.

The magazine says that Central Bank Governor Dr. Weerasinghe accepted the current situation as it was and honestly predicted that difficulties would persist until December of that year.

“When he assumed the role of Central Bank Governor in April 2022, inflation was 29.8% and reached 61% in November of that year before gradually decreasing. “Thanks to tight policy measures, inflation fell to single digits by July 2023, marking a significant improvement in a year,” the magazine further stated.

However, at a press conference held on the implementation of the Parata law, the media spokesperson of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka harshly criticized the Central Bank Governor.

Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, thus joins the 30th ‘Sri Lankan of the Year’ society named by LMD.
