Electricity mafia starts work. Risk of power outage in February

”Although water in the reservoirs associated with hydropower plants is overfllow and there is plenty of coal in the country, the Ceylon Electricity Board has purchased electricity from private power plants” said the Nandana Udayakumara, vice President of the Ceylon Electricity Board’s Technical Engineers Association. He further to said that electricity mafia is operating within the board despite the change of government

He said that as a ploy to purchase electricity from private power plants, a one generator at the Norochcholai Thermal Power Plant has been not operated its maximum capacity . Its a clear signal that the electricity mafia, which has been operating in the electrasity Power Board for a long time, has raised its head again.

He said that this electricity mafia has also become a major factor in the increase in electricity tariffs and that purchasing electricity from the private sector is a big smuggling when there is the ability to generate electricity from hydropower and coal.

He says that due to this unnecessary purchase of electricity, the board will be left without money to purchase electricity during the dry weather that will occur in February and March next year. If such a situation arises, he said that power cuts may be necessary again for four to five hours.
