The government has decided to adopt a more scientific approach to controlling wild animals such as elephants, wild elephants and other animals that damage crops. An inter-ministerial unit will be established to recommend the necessary measures, said Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha.
He said that this step was taken because the steps taken by the previous governments to prevent damage to the crops of the farmers by wild animals were not effective solutions.
The Minister made this statement during a special discussion held with the agricultural policy makers of the National People’s Power with the participation of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Namal Karunaratne and Deputy Minister of Lands and Irrigation Dr. Susil Ranasinghe.
