About 50% of the total pig population in the Western Province alone has died due to African Swine Fever, said Director of the Western Province Animal Production and Health Department K.K. Sarath said. He added that the highest number of pigs died in Gampaha district.
Meanwhile, the Director General of Animal Production and Health Department, Dr. Hemali Kothalawala, said that due to the situation of African swine fever, a new gazette notice was taken to relax the rules imposed in the gazette notice.
According to the gazette notification, permission has been given for transportation of healthy animals.
As this week passes, the spread of swine flu has decreased to some extent.
Accordingly, with the aim of protecting the animal and livestock industry, steps have been taken to revise the previously issued gazette announcement. The new revised gazette will be effective from last 04th until further notice.
According to the previous gazette, transportation of animals was stopped, but the new gazette allowed them to transport their animals through an animal health report from a veterinarian.
