The Election Commission says that 8352 candidates are competing for this year’s general election. Its Director General Saman Sri Ratnayake stated that most of them are competing from the Colombo district and the number is 966.
The number of groups that appeared in Colombo for the election, 50. Out of this, the nominations of 46 groups were accepted, Colombo District Electoral Officer Prasanna Ginige stated.
These include 27 recognized political parties and 19 independent groups.
Polonnaruwa district has the least number of candidates, 120. Among them are 13 recognized political parties and 2 independent groups.
