Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela has ordered the Criminal Investigation Department today (09) to name the specialist who performed the operation as a suspect and not as a witness, but as a suspect, and arrest him immediately and present him to the court if the police investigations reveal that the death of a three-year-old girl after kidney surgery at the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital is a crime.
The Magistrate has issued this order after considering the facts presented by the Criminal Investigation Department that Mr. Navin Wijekoon, the expert surgeon who has been named as a witness in the post-mortem investigation of the girl, is abroad avoiding the examination of evidence in the autopsy investigation.
The secret police has told the court that although the testimony of expert surgeon Navin Vijayakon, who was in charge of the girl’s surgery, was to be called through Skype technology, the witness who is staying in Australia has not given any response regarding the giving of the testimony.
