Although there has been a recent decrease in the prevalence of dengue, the health authorities say that the number of dengue patients is likely to increase with the current rainfall.
Commenting on this, the Director of the National Dengue Control Unit Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said that the local authorities and health organizations are working tirelessly to curb the spread of dengue.
“Public awareness campaigns, anti-mosquito measures and prompt medical assistance to victims remain key strategies in the fight against the disease,” he stressed.
As several areas of Sri Lanka have received significant rainfall in the past few days, health officials are urging people to keep the surrounding environment clean and destroy mosquito breeding grounds to combat dengue.
According to the latest data from the Department of Epidemiology, 23,731 dengue cases have been reported as of 16 May 2024.
The highest number of infected people has been reported from Colombo district with 5,057 patients. Among the provinces, Western Province topped the list with 8,515 reported cases.
