The government fulfills its promise to the plantation workers on May Day.

The Commissioner General of Labour has issued a special gazette notification increasing the daily wages of plantation workers by 70%.

According to the gazette announcement, the new salary of plantation workers will be increase up to Rs .1700.00.

This increase in wages is applicable for the workers employed in the tea growing and manufacturing industry as well as for the workers employed in the rubber growing and raw rubber processing industries. It is mentioned in the gazette announcement that the protest related to this salary increase will end on May 15.

Manusha Nanayakkara, Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment, strongly intervened on the increase in the wages of plantation workers and after several rounds of long negotiations, an agreement was reached with the employers on the increase in wages.
