The Supreme Court issued an interim restraining order against President Ranil Wickremesinghe, preventing him from recommending judges to the posts of Supreme Court judges other than the post of Chief Justice. The Constituent Assembly was also ordered to act according to this order.
The Supreme Court thus issued the interim order allowing the hearing of a fundamental rights petition filed by a lawyer against the decision of the Legislative Council refusing to appoint the President of the Court of Appeal, Judge Nishanka Bandula Karunaratne.
The relevant interim order will remain in force till the hearing of this petition. The court ordered to hear this petition on October 4.
The petition was considered before a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices S. Thureiraja, Shiran Gunaratne and Dilip Nawaz.
Members of Parliament who are members of the Constituent Assembly have been named as respondents in the fundamental rights petition filed by lawyer M. Pathiratne.
