Minister Bandula Gunawardena stated that an income of 5 billion rupees should be obtained from highways annually. He emphasized that failure to do so could result in taking 160 years to pay off the loan of 800 billion rupees acquired for expressways.
He stressed that one cannot settle this debt within a lifetime of 80 years, and even if one were reincarnated several times and worked diligently throughout those lifetimes, the debt would persist.
To settle the debt, the minister proposed transferring the highway system and its assets to the state-owned Company. He emphasized that failure to do so would burden innocent people with the debt for the rest of their lives.
