“After paying off the debt, my salary is not enough to deduct taxes,” says a port union leader.

Niroshan Gorakana, general secretary of the All Ceylon Harbor Public Association, states that after deducting the income tax imposed by the government, he have to pay another 2000 rupees to the bank.

He said that he is currently receiving a salary of 120,200 rupees, but he has taken four loans from that salary.

He expressed these views to the media while rejecting the statement made by Port Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva that a port employee gets a salary of one lakh seventy one thousand rupees.
