The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority (SLAEA) has given the green light for nuclear power with investors from countries like Russia, China, Denmark and the US proposing to invest in Sri Lanka’s nuclear power plants, an official said.
Russia, which has already invested in nuclear power generation in Bangladesh and India, is keen to set up a plant in Sri Lanka. A high-ranking Russian delegation recently visited Sri Lanka and discussed the proposed cooperation in the nuclear energy sector with the Sri Lankan authorities.
SLAEA President Prof. S.R.D.Rosa Speaking to the media, informed the delegation about the current situation regarding the Russian proposal to develop an offshore or onshore nuclear power plant in Sri Lanka.
He mentioned that his office has given preliminary approval for nuclear power to increase Sri Lanka’s energy mix and it has been sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for approval.
