The president of Ceylon Private Bus Owners’ Association Gemunu Wijeratne says that raising bus fares against the increased fuel prices is illegal. According to the National Bus Fare Policy, bus fares can be hiked only if the increase in fuel prices exceeds 4%.
He points out that the increase in the price of diesel by ten rupees is a 2% increase in the fuel price and says that he has no intention of increasing the bus fares at this time.
But the General Secretary of the All Ceylon Private Bus Owners’ Association, Anjana Indrajith, states that the government should allow bus fares to be increased by a minimum percentage of 5%.
He said that the increase in bus fares should be done on the basis that a liter of diesel has been increased by 10 rupees and a liter of super diesel has been increased by 62 rupees since midnight last night.
