Will Facebook leave Sri Lanka?

It is reported that a meeting between President Ranil Wickremesinghe and head of the global relations division of the well-known “Meta” company, which owns many social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp, took place yesterday.

The President has explained to Sir Nick Clegg about the new measures taken by the Government of Sri Lanka to combat hate speech and false propaganda on social media including the Internet.

The President has also mentioned that those affected by the Act proposed to be introduced in the future can take action through the Supreme Court.

However, due to the strict regulation of social media by the electronic media regulatory acts proposed to be implemented in Sri Lanka, it is very likely that popular social media platforms like Meta will leave Sri Lanka. They say that if such a thing happens, it can lead to severe social unrest
