Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Nalin Bandara said that with the general consensus of the opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will nominate a member for the post of mayor for the Colombo Municipal Council, and that an agreement has been reached to give the deputy mayor post of the said Municipal Council to the United National Party.
Speaking to the media, he said,
The commissioners are scheduled to visit a large number of local government institutions and appoint chairmen and mayors with the consent of the majority of the members. So we believe that a situation has arisen where the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, the parties supporting the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, and the opposition parties in general can come together and take action to gain power in the majority of local government institutions.
Especially when talking about the Colombo Municipal Council, the power in the Colombo Municipal Council was not even gained. The majority is with the opposition. That majority also includes a number of independent groups. The government is making a great effort to bargain for various concessions. So we are very confident that a Samagi Jana Balawegaya will be able to appoint a mayor to Colombo with a majority. We will name the mayor in the future.
