Ranil meets the Japanese Prime Minister to take back the light rail service

It is reported that during the visit of President Ranil Wickremesinghe to Japan, the resumption of the light rail project in Sri Lanka and the possibility of starting several other projects will be discussed.

Sri Lanka entered into an agreement with Japan during the last good governance prtiode to operate a light rail service from Malabe to Fort Railway Station. But the agreement was canceled after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa came to power. Due to that action, Sri Lanka-Japan relations were damaged and the project was later taken over by Bangladesh.

During the official visit of the President to Japan from May 24 to 27, discussions are scheduled to be held with the country’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Also, President Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to hold talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki and Digitalization Minister Taro Kono.
