Weather Risks for the Next 24 Hours

A red warning for strong winds and rough seas has been issued by the Department of Meteorology, Natural Disaster Early Warning Center.

The warning has been issued until 02.30 pm tomorrow (11). According to the warning, strong winds are likely to occur in the sea areas off the coast from Chilaw to Puttalam and Mannar to Kankesanthurai and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Due to the influence of the southwest monsoon weather conditions, the wind speed in the sea areas off the coast from Chilaw to Puttalam and Mannar to Kankesanthurai and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will increase to about (60–70) kmph at times and those sea areas will become very rough at times, the Department of Meteorology says.

Accordingly, the maritime and fishing communities have been informed not to sail into this sea area until further notice.

The maritime and fishing communities are further advised to pay attention to future announcements issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.
