The American ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, says that she appreciates the new government’s fair and impartial approach to providing housing and other benefits to plantation owners, as before, regardless of party affiliation.
A special meeting was held between the American ambassador, Mrs. Julie Chung, and the Minister of Plantations and Community Infrastructure, Samantha Vidyaratne, at the Ministry of Plantations and Community Infrastructure, and the ambassador made the following remarks at the special meeting.
There were also extensive discussions on innovations to be made in the tea, coconut and rubber sectors to increase the country’s economic growth in the future. The ambassador also emphasized that necessary steps will be taken to develop economic relations between the United States and Sri Lanka in the future.
Minister Samantha Vidyaratne said that the Malayagam community has provided great strength to the country’s economy and that the government will fully intervene to provide the basic rights that have been lost to these people.
At this, Ms. Julie Chang said that it is regrettable that politicians make promises to the plantation people during the election period with the aim of gaining votes, but then do not fulfill those promises.
Deputy Minister of Plantations and Community Infrastructure Sundaralingam Pradeep, Ministry Secretary Prabath Chandrakeerthi and a group of embassy staff officers participated in this event.
