Four Sri Lankan air passengers who were trying to smuggle a consignment of ‘Kush’ worth Rs. 75 million into the country and take it out through the Red Channel at the Katunayake Airport were arrested by airport customs officers yesterday (21) afternoon.
One of the suspects arrested has been identified as a woman from Kompanya Street.
After being arrested and questioned by customs officers, the other three members of the gang were identified and arrested after monitoring the airport security camera system. All of them are residents of Colombo and its suburbs.
They purchased this drug stock from Thailand, arrived in Bangalore, India, and from there arrived at the Katunayake Airport yesterday afternoon.
Since these drugs can currently be easily purchased in the open market in Thailand, passengers arriving at the Katunayake Airport from that country are subject to strict screening, this group arrived in Bangalore, India, and from there arrived in Sri Lanka.
