Sikhs protest against India in Canada.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced last week that his government is investigating whether India had diplomatic ties to the killing of a Canadian Sikh leader.

Mahinder Singh, spokesman for the Council of British Columbia Gurdwaras, a coalition of Sikh temples, said: “For 40 years, we have been working to make the world aware of India’s harassment of our community abroad.

“Hardeep Singh’s murder was not a domestic conspiracy, there was clearly a foreign conspiracy,” he told Al Jazeera.

On June 18, Nijjar was fatally shot at a Sikh temple in Surrey, southeast of Vancouver. His death caused concern and anger in the local community.

“For a foreign government to be involved in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is a serious violation of our sovereignty,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on September 18. The separatists calling for a separate state of Khalistan for the Sikhs have also held a protest in Canada saying that the Indian government is involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh.
