The Supreme Court orders the National Police Commission to consider the matter of appointing Senior Superintendent of Police Bimshani Jasingha Arachchi, who served as the Acting Deputy Inspector General of the Community Police Unit, to the post with effect from the 5th of October.
The courts issued the order yesterday announcing the decision of a fundamental rights petition submitted by Senior Superintendent of Police Bimshani Jasingha Arachchi. The Supreme Court’s decision states that the petitioner’s fundamental human rights have been violated by removing her from that position. The petition was considered before the three-judge Supreme Court bench of S. Thurai Raja, Shiran Gunaratne and Achala Vengappuli.
Speaking before the court, President’s Advocate Faizer Mustafa, who appeared for the petitioner, said that his client, who was the Acting Deputy Inspector General of the Community Police Unit, went abroad to work for the United Nations for a period of one year.
The President’s Counsel also mentioned that his client was not allowed to work in the position of Acting Deputy Inspector General of Police after her one-year service period ended.
14 people including the National Police Commission, the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security, and four Acting Deputy Inspector Generals of Police were named as respondents.
