Higher Education Minister and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said that students are admitted to the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) not based on the cut-off score (Z-Score) considered by the University Grants Commission, as is the case for admission to state universities in the country.
The Prime Minister made this statement while participating in the parliamentary session today (04) in response to a question raised by MP Ravi Karunanayake.
The Prime Minister also said that the Kotelawala Defence University is known as a university under the Ministry of Defence.
Therefore, she said that only on one special occasion, that is, in the year 2019, the University Grants Commission had to admit 100 students to the Faculty of Medicine, and then those children were admitted to Kotelawala University under special circumstances by paying money from the treasury.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that after that, students were not admitted to Kotelawala University by considering the ISEED score of the University Grants Commission in any way.
Therefore, the Prime Minister also stated that the admission of students to Kotelawala University is done based on a methodology unique to them.
Meanwhile, recently, Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya stopped the admission of new students to the Faculty of Medicine of the Kotelawala Defence University, and the aggrieved parties took steps to submit a complaint to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka against this.
