Mahindananda and Nalin Fernando sentenced to long prison terms

Former Trade Minister Nalin Fernando has been sentenced to 25 years in prison with rigorous imprisonment and former Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage to 20 years in prison with rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

A case was filed against the defendants on six charges alleging that the carrom boards and ”dam boards” brought to the CWE Institute during the 2015 presidential election were distributed to sports associations for political purposes, causing a loss of over Rs. 53 million to the government. The case was filed by the Bribery Commission on June 27, 2019.

Mahindananda Aluthgamage was the Trade Minister at the time, and Nalin Fernando was the CWE Chairman.

In addition to the prison sentence, they have also been fined.
