Due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions, red landslide warnings have been issued for several areas in three districts of the island. The people in the relevant areas should immediately evacuate from those areas for the safety of their lives, said Police Media Spokesperson, Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa, addressing a media briefing held this morning.
There is a high possibility of rain on the eastern and western slopes of the central hills. Accordingly, red evacuation notices have been issued for the following areas in the Kandy district: Harispattuwa, Medadumbara, Gangawatakorala, Ududumbara, Doluwa, Yatinuwara, Udapalatha, Pathahewaheta, Delthota, Pathadumbara.
Red notices have also been issued for Wilgamuwa, Ambagamuwa, Ambagamuwa Korale, Ratthota, Naula and Ukuwela in the Matale district and Walapane in the Nuwara Eliya district. The police media spokesperson said that the public should evacuate those areas as there is a risk of landslides in those areas.
”If your homes have been affected by disasters, go to safe camps. We are doing our best to protect your homes. We are doing everything possible to protect them from thieves and enemies by going above using drone cameras. The important thing here is to take care of your safety. Please evacuate from areas with red notices in the central hills. There is a lot of moisture in the hills. Evacuate from areas that are considered dangerous. Do not pull vehicles moving in hilly areas to the side of the road. Bus drivers should pay attention when overtaking on the road,” he said, commenting further.
He stated that a special telephone number has been introduced for the Tamil speaking community to use in emergencies, and that Tamil speaking people can obtain necessary advice by dialing the number 107.
