Japan protests Sri Lanka’s tax on Japanese vehicles.

Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata expressed his concern over the high tax rates imposed on vehicles imported from Japan to Sri Lanka.

The Japanese Ambassador stated that the tax rates imposed on electric vehicles imported from Japan to Sri Lanka are high when compared to the tax rates imposed on electric vehicles imported from other countries and that if a free trade agreement is to be reached between Sri Lanka and Japan, the tax rates imposed on vehicles imported from Japan must definitely be discussed.

However, he also said that Japan is not ready for a free trade agreement with Sri Lanka just to point out that there is a trade agreement between the two countries. However, the Japanese Ambassador also stated that no request has been received from Sri Lanka for a free trade agreement so far.
