Electricity bill hiked, but consumers benefit by 5.4%

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has announced that the proposed revision will increase the new electricity tariff by 5.4% compared to the current rate, but it will be approximately 5.4% lower than the electricity tariff prevailing earlier this year.

The CEB also said that this is because the CEB had reduced electricity tariffs by 20% in early 2025 as a relief to electricity consumers. As a result of that revision, the average selling price of a unit of electricity fell to Rs. 24 and the new tariff revision proposal is a half-correction of the losses incurred by the Ceylon Electricity Board in early 2025 under this reduced tariff, the institution pointed out.

Therefore, the revised new tariff will be lower than the electricity tariff in January 2025, according to the announcement issued by the Electricity Board.

The Electricity Board requested the Public Utilities Commission to increase the electricity bill by 18.3%.
