It is reported that nearly 100 members of the National People’s Power government are facing serious inconvenience due to the lack of sufficient vehicles to use.
Government sources say that due to this situation, many problems have arisen for members of parliament living in remote areas to attend parliamentary sessions, and in some cases, three or four members use the same vehicle to attend the parliment session..
It is reported that many new members of parliament are disappointed that vehicles have been provided for the use of ministers and deputy ministers despite facing such problems. They point out that it is unfair for the government not to provide them even though there are sufficient vehicles in the government’s vehicle pool for members of parliament.
Commenting on this, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala says that the lack of vehicles is a pressing issue for the government.
He says that there are enough vehicles in the government pool to distribute to MPs, but they are luxury vehicles. However, he points out that according to the government’s policies, it is not possible to provide duty-free vehicle import permits or luxury vehicles to MPs as in the past.
Instead, the government has decided to hand over vehicles to them on the condition of returning them at the end of their term. Accordingly, he says that it has been decided to auction the luxury vehicles currently in the government’s possession. He said that the luxury vehicles currently in the government’s possession will be auctioned soon and a decision will be taken on providing vehicles to MPs after that.
