Dog hanged by mediation board

A mediation board in Oddusudan, Mullaitivu district, has issued a ruling to hang a dog that bit a goat, the Animal Welfare Coalition (AWC) has revealed.

Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara, executive committee member of the organization, told the ‘Daily Mirror’ website that a letter has been sent to Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara regarding the incident. According to the letter, the incident was reported on Saturday (25).

The mediation board in Oddusudan has reportedly issued an order to hang the dog as a solution to the conflict between the two groups.

A dispute has reportedly erupted between the two families after a dog belonging to one family bit a goat belonging to another.

The case was referred to the Mediation Board, where it is alleged that three mediators decided to hang the dog, and the dog’s family was instructed to provide photographic evidence of the act.

Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara says that the family that received the order acted on this order and carried out the inhumane act of hanging the dog.

Since issuing such an order violates both moral and legal principles, the AWC calls on the Minister to intervene immediately to ensure justice is served and prevent such heinous acts from recurring.

The Mediation Board cannot issue decisions or orders. They are only empowered to resolve conflicts by explaining the facts to the parties.
