The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today ordered the release of Parliamentarian Chamara Sampath Dassanayake on bail.
In 2016, while serving as the Chief Minister of the Uva Provincial Council, he had requested a favor from the National Savings Bank to provide bags to pre-school children in the province, and after the bank rejected his request, he had caused a loss of over one hundred and seventy-three million rupees to the relevant Provincial Council by withdrawing 06 fixed deposit accounts belonging to the relevant Provincial Council before maturity.
The case was taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali today (08).
At that time, the Legal Officer of the Bribery Commission presented the facts before the court and requested that the court issue an order regarding the suspect as it deems appropriate.
Thereafter, President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa, who appeared for the suspect, presented evidence before the court, stating that the suspect was remanded in custody for another case and that he was unable to influence witnesses as the preliminary investigations into this incident had been completed.
Accordingly, the President’s Counsel requested the court to release the suspect on bail.
