The Court of Appeal has issued an interim injunction today preventing the arrest of former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles and the directors of Ceylon Newspapers Private Limited by the Criminal Investigation Department.
A writ petition was filed before the Court of Appeal stating that there is a plan to arrest the former minister and his group in connection with a breach of an agreement to supply paper used for printing newspapers.
The petition was considered today by a bench of Justices Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne, the President of the Court of Appeal, and B. Shashi Mahendran. The bench of judges has subsequently issued the interim injunction to be in effect until the 21st of this month.
Two individuals employed by Ceylon Newspapers Private Limited, who had obtained paper for printing newspapers and issued bad cheques amounting to 290,173,984 (290,173,984) were recently arrested by the Commercial Crimes Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department.
The two individuals arrested are residents of Homagama and Polgasowita.
