The Asia Internet Coalition (“AIC”), a global body of Internet and technology companies, and its members have expressed their concerns over the proposed Online Safety Bill to be implemented by Sri Lanka.
The agency says that if the bill is brought, extensive amendments should be made to it.
In a letter to Public Safety Minister Tiran Alas, AIC Managing Director Jeff Payne said that the complexities and nuances that have arisen over the bill require more extensive and meaningful consultation.
The agency also says that this act is an obstacle to achieving the goals of the digital economy that Sri Lanka hopes to implement.
AIC is an organization consisting of companies such as Amazon, Apple, Booking.com, Expedia Group, Google, GoTo, Grab, LINE, LinkedIn, Meta, Rakuten, X and Yahoo.
