A father and son were attacked with a sword by a man in the Ambarullagahawatta area of Mathugama, killing the son.
Police said that the attack took place during a clash that escalated after a dispute between two groups last night (11).
The father and son, who were seriously injured in the attack, have been admitted to the Nagoda Hospital in Kalutara, where the son died.
The deceased was identified as Ashen Chamika Perera, a 23-year-old unmarried youth residing in the Navutthuduwa area of Yatidola. The injured father is a 51-year-old resident of the same area.
Yesterday afternoon, this group had organized a rice ”dansela” in the Navathuduwa area of Matugama on the occasion of the Poson festival. After the dansala, the group that organized it went to a restaurant in the Kadawaka area of Matugama and drank alcohol.
It is reported that the elder brother of the deceased youth had got into an argument with one of his father’s brothers and attacked him with a helmet. The dispute was later resolved. However, the person who had attacked him with a helmet, who was guarding the road, attacked the two with a sword. Investigations have revealed that the attack was carried out by the deceased’s father’s brother.
The suspect has fled after the incident. The Matugama Police are conducting further investigations to arrest him.
