There are reports that a powerful businessman, a powerful figure in the government in the Western Province, is behind the release of 323 containers that were labeled in the red category by the Customs themselves as requiring strict inspection, says Advocate Nirashan Withanage, convener of the Progressive Youth Movement.
He said that the containers that have been recommended for such strict inspection may contain many prohibited items that are prohibited from being imported into the country, and he also pointed out that many items including firearms, drugs, explosives, prohibited medicines and others may be among them.
He also said that this suspicion is also raised through the statement made by the Deputy Minister of Ports that the government will accept all responsibility for containers that are not inspected.
The Progressive Youth Movement has also filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department regarding this.
