A case gainst Express Pearl will be filed in Singapore tomorrow.

The Attorney General’s Department says that a lawsuit will be filed in a Singapore court tomorrow (24) demanding compensation for the damage caused to the Sri Lankan marine environment by the Express Pearl ship that sank not far from the Colombo port.

Minister of Justice Wijedasa Rajapakse, who spoke to the media in this regard, said that all activities related to the said legislation have been completed by now. On May 20, 2021, this ship caught fire near the port of Colombo and was later towed to the distant sea.

After the ship capsized, plastic particles and harmful chemicals were released into the ocean. As a result, the coastline from Panadura to Puttalam was seriously polluted.

Due to the environmental damage, a large number of marine life including turtles and dolphins died. In addition, the country’s fishing industry and tourism industry suffered a huge loss.
