700 Marines to protect Los Angeles

An emergency curfew has been imposed in downtown Los Angeles amid rising protests and looting.

Mayor Karen Bass said the curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. local time, but could be extended for several days if necessary.

The mayor said 23 businesses were looted during the four-day protests. The Los Angeles Police Department said at least 378 people had been arrested in the past four days, including 200 in the past 24 hours.

Foreign media reports that about 700 Marines have been called to the city to assist federal police officers and secure property, and that these teams are ready to enter the city at any time.
