A spokesperson for the Essential Food Importers Association said that four orders of 25,000-30,000 tonnes of rice have been placed from India.
The Pettah wholesale importers have placed this order with Indian suppliers as the government has allowed the private sector to import rice as a quick solution to the rice shortage.
However, they point out that due to the insufficient time given by the government to import rice, only a small amount of rice will be imported.
