A wild elephant has attacked a couple who were spending the night in a tent built in an unprotected forest area in Uda Diyluma area of Koslanda. The girl died on the spot due to the attack. The deceased was a 23-year-old girl resident of Matara area.
The young man who was in the tent with the dead girl was also injured by the elephant attack and was hospitalized. A spokesperson of the wildlife department said in reply to our inquiry that this place is not a campsite owned by the wildlife department.
This land is owned by the Land Reform Commission and is reportedly located on an elephant corridore. Local residents say that this place is not suitable to be used as a camping site at all
